As its name implies, a Tire-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses sensors to monitor tire pressure and warn you when the pressure is low. Because of the incidence of rollovers associated with Ford Explorers and Firestone tires, Congress enacted legislation in 2000 requiring TPMS to be standard equipment in all vehicles since 2008. This legislation does not require the TPMS warning light until a tire is 25% below the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure, which is considered by AAA to be well below safe driving levels. Because of this, it’s important to check tire pressure regularly for under-inflation. In addition to safety considerations, under-inflated tires wear our faster and waste fuel. Keeping them properly inflated will save you money.
For these reasons, it’s critical to maintain the TPMS. Sensor batteries die and must be replaced, and sometimes the sensors themselves become damaged by road salt & grime.
